SEPTEMBER 15

Workshops: Japanese flower arranging (Ikebana) utilizing Sogetsu School techniques. Two sessions: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm (“Gradations of Green”) and 1:00 – 3:00 pm (“Artistry with Split Bamboo”). Fee: $35 per session; payable in class. Advance registration required.

OCTOBER 1

The Gardens reopen for the Fall 2017 season. Hours: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm Sundays; 9:30 am – 4:30 pm Tuesday – Saturday. Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, December 24, 25 & 31, and New Year’s Day. All times are weather permitting.

Museum exhibit:  “Between Folds: Origami Classical and Modern.” A pageant of ingenious folded paper forms by origami artist M. Craig. Through December 31. Entrance is free with regular Gardens admission. (Of interest: a parallel exhibition of large metal origami – “Butterfly Affaire: Origami in the Garden” – opens October 8 at the nearby Tucson Botanical Gardens.)

Museum exhibit: “Mingei: Old Japan on Hand.” A permanent display in a new museum gallery of folk art objects produced by ordinary Japanese and used in their daily routines. Also free with regular Gardens admission.

OCTOBER 13

Presentation: “The Spirit of Ikebana.” Delve into the history and philosophy of traditional Japanese flower arranging and watch a demonstration of basic arrangement principles. 10:00 – 11:30 am. Fee: $10, does not include Gardens admission.

OCTOBER 15

Workshops: Sogetsu School Ikebana flower arrangement, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Fee: $35 per session; payable in class. Advance registration required.

Art Gallery:  Artist reception from 5:30 – 7:30 pm for Phoenix Ikebana master and ceramicist Ping Wei at the opening of “Enlightened Heart,” an exhibition and sale of wooden sculptures and tablets on which he has used wood-burning tools to engrave Asian calligraphy and other designs. Exhibition opens October 16 and runs through December 31.

OCTOBER 17

Workshop: Classical Ikenobo School Ikebana flower arrangement. 6:00 – 8:00 pm Fee: $25, payable in class. Advance registration required.

OCTOBER 22

Workshop: Classical Ikenobo School Ikebana flower arrangement. 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Fee: $25, payable in class. Advance registration required.

OCTOBER 28

Tea Ceremony: Spiritual and artistic ritual performed by a tea master in traditional kimono, with servings of Japanese green tea. 4:30 – 5:30 pm Fee: $15 per person, does not include Gardens and museum admission. Advance registration required.

NOVEMBER 10 – 12

“Enchanted Evenings.” Nighttime strolls through the Gardens by candle- and lantern light, to the accompaniment of recorded traditional Japanese melodies played on bamboo flute. 7:00 – 8:30 pm Admission: $10 for adults; $5 for children under 15.

NOVEMBER 12

Workshop: Classical Ikenobo School Ikebana flower arrangement. 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Fee: $25, payable in class. Advance registration required.

NOVEMBER 14

Workshop: Classical Ikenobo School Ikebana flower arrangement. 6:00 – 8:00 pm Fee: $25, payable in class. Advance registration required.

NOVEMBER 19

Workshops: Sogetsu School Ikebana flower arrangement, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Fee: $35 per session; payable in class. Advance registration required.

NOVEMBER 21 – 26

Ikebana Japanese Floral Festival: 50 floral displays by five different schools of Japanese flower arranging practice, arrayed throughout the grounds, museum, and art gallery. Admission of $15 for adults and $5 for children under 15 includes entrance to the entire Gardens. (The Gardens will be closed November 23, Thanksgiving Day.)

DECEMBER 5

Workshop: Classical Ikenobo School Ikebana flower arrangement. 6:00 – 8:00 pm Fee: $25, payable in class. Advance registration required. Instruction will be given in making a traditional New Year’s arrangement.

DECEMBER 8

Workshop: Gift Wrapping, Japanese-Style, 3:00 – 4:30 pm. The Japanese have traditionally bundled clothes, carried purchases, and presented gifts by wrapping them in colorful squares of fabric called furoshiki. $25 fee does not include entry to the Gardens. Reservations required.

 

DECEMBER 10

Workshop: Classical Ikenobo School Ikebana flower arrangement. 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Fee: $25, payable in class. Advance registration required. Instruction will be given in making a traditional New Year’s arrangement.
